Matt Damon and Adam Driver Duel to the Death in Ridley Scott’s Retelling of a True-to-Life Historical Epic

The trailer for Ridley Scott’s highly-anticipated historical drama The Last Duel has been released. Set in the grey-hued lands of 14th century France, the film tells the true story of an epic duel between the Norman knight Jean de Carrouges and his former friend and squire, Jacques Le Gris, after Carrouges’ wife Marguerite publicly accuses Le Gris of rape. If Carrouges is to fail, not only will he lose his life, but his wife will be burnt at the stake on the charge of false accusations.

“The truth does not matter,” a woman tells Marguerite of her impending fate. “There is only the power of men.”

Based on the book The Last Duel: A True Story of Trial by Combat in Medieval France by Eric Jager, the film chronicles the narrative of the last officially recognized judicial duel fought in France. The screenplay was written by Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Nicole Holofcener, with Damon also starring as Carrouges and Affleck making an appearance as Count Pierre d’Alençon. Adam Driver co-stars opposite Damon as Le Gris, while Marguerite is played by Jodie Comer.

Scott previously directed another high-production historical drama, 2000’s Gladiator, for which he was awarded an Oscar for Best Picture.

Out from 20th Century Studios, The Last Duel is set to arrive in theaters on October 15.
