Just when everyone thinks the buzz about Justice League is over, HBO Max reveals that it will be releasing a black-and-white cut of the film, titled Justice is Gray.
GamesRadar+ reported that Zack Snyder initially teased the black-and-white version in a MANvsGame Twitch stream, which featured a discussion between Zack Snyder and Joe Manganiello, who plays Deathstroke in the original film. The clip is a snippet of a scene in the original Justice League: The Snyder Cut, showcasing Ben Affleck as Batman speaking in conversation with Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth.
Snyder revealed on the stream that he “briefly entertained” the idea of the Snyder Cut in black-and-white, but initially thought it would come off as “too militant”. He also added, “For me, the movie has lived, when I left the movie I kept it on my laptop and I turned it black and white in some sort of cathartic and sort of visual, I don’t know if it’s protest or whether it was just some way of dealing with this whole thing. But I had it, I turned it black and white. And so for me the movie lived in black and white for two years… And it still does, because one of the caveats when I said I would finish the movie was like ‘I also want to finish a black and white version of the movie.’”
The director also discussed wanting to do charity screenings for Justice is Gray in IMAX theaters across the nation once it reopens, as well as further diving into how and why he decided to turn the film into black-and-white, “I know like everyone’s just like oh I turned the colour off, it wasn’t that, trust me it’s not that easy. It’s its own thing, it really becomes its own thing.”
There is currently no word on when Justice is Gray will officially debut on HBO Max.
