Johnny Depp donates $1,000,000 settlement from Amber Heard to charity

Amber Heard has made a payment of $1million (£780,000) to Johnny Depp as part of the settlement agreement in the latter’s defamation case.

Depp, 60, was awarded $10 million (£7.9million) in damages following his lawsuit again ex-wife Heard, 37.

The Pirates of the Caribbean star has donated the first million received in damages to charity.

A source close to Depp said the money was given to five separate charities, with each receiving $200,000 (£158,000).

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Depp donated to Make-A-Film Foundation, The Painted Turtle, Red Feather, Tetiaroa Society and Amazonia Fund Alliance.

Dad-of-two Depp’s reps told the outlet: ‘We are pleased to formally close the door on this painful chapter for Mr. Depp, who made clear throughout this process that his priority was about bringing the truth to light.’

Make-A-Film Foundation grants showbiz wishes to seriously ill children while the Amazonia Fund Alliance strives to protect the Amazon’s Indigenous communities.

Red Feather also works with Indigenous communities, providing housing solutions.

The Painted Turtle is a free summer camp for kids suffering from life-threatening illnesses and the Tetiaroa Society is another conservation charity.

On June 1, 2022, a Virginia jury ruled in favour of Depp, finding that a Washington Post article Heard wrote in 2018 defamed her ex-husband.

However, less than two years prior, a UK court found it substantially true that Depp was a ‘wife-beater’, as reported by the Sun.

Depp lost his UK libel case against the newspaper and during the trial, Heard gave evidence to back up the Sun’s claims.

Judge Mr Justice Nicol found that 12 of 14 alleged incidents of domestic violence against Aquaman star Heard had occurred.

Writing on Instagram after her most recent legal battle with Depp, Heard said she decided to settle ‘having lost faith in the American legal system, where my unprotected testimony served as entertainment and social media fodder’. has reached out to Depp and Heard’s reps for comment.
