Disney+ has finally shared the release date for the fairy-dusted Enchanted sequel

Disney+ has revealed when Disenchanted, a “fantastical” sequel to Amy Adams’ hit film Enchanted, is coming to our screens.

It’s hard to believe that Disney’s Enchanted first hit cinemas way back in 2007, especially when you consider just how self-aware and subversive it was.

In the popular live-action film, we watched Giselle (Amy Adams) learn that “love at first sight” doesn’t hold a candle to a relationship forged slowly over time, not to mention become the hero of her own story when evil-queen-turned-dragon (Susan Sarandon) grabs hold of Patrick Dempsey and steals him away.

And, come the storybook epilogue, we learned that Giselle has:

  1. turned down a proposal that didn’t sit well with her
  2. entered into a relationship based on mutual respect and equality with Dempsey’s character
  3. vanquished the tired old stereotype of the “evil stepmother” by providing a happy home for Dempsey’s daughter from a previous marriage
  4. set up a successful business of her very own, too!

Indeed, it seemed as if all of Enchanted’s loose ends had been well and truly tied up.

So you can imagine how surprised we were to learn that the film isn’t just getting a Disney+ sequel all these years later; it will see both Adams and Dempsey return to reprise their roles, too!

Following a marathon morning of announcements during Disney Plus Day back in November 2021, the studio revealed that  lovable princess-to-be, Giselle, will return to screens in Fall 2022 in Disenchanted, a sequel to the hit film Enchanted, streaming exclusively on Disney Plus.

In a pre-recorded video, Adams and Dempsey confirmed the release date, along with news that the beloved original Enchanted was now available to stream on the platform.

Back in August, director Adam Shankman shared the exciting update that filming for Disenchanted had wrapped. And now, we finally have a date to put in our diaries. It will be landing on our screens on Thursday 24 November. As well as the date announcement, we also have our first glimpse of the new film and Maya Rudolph’s villainous Malvina Monroe:

After filming on the sequel finished, Idina Menzel – who will also be returning as Nancy Tremaine, the New Yorker who found herself unexpectedly falling for a fairytale prince of her own – shared some exciting new details about the film.

First things first? The Tony Award-winning singer will actually be lending her own powerhouse vocals (this is, after all, the same woman who gave us Let It Go in Frozen) to the musical movie’s soundtrack.

“They gave me songs,” she shared with People of the film’s songwriting geniuses, Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz.

“They gave me music to sing, which I didn’t have in the first one, which was fine actually, everyone else made a big deal about it.”

Amy Adams and Patrick Dempsey will both be back for the Enchanted sequel.

Adding that she’s “excited” for audiences to reunite with the beloved characters, Menzel told Us Weekly: “It was beautiful [filming this movie]. It was terrific. It was in Ireland near Dublin, mostly. So it was a fairy tale within a fairy tale.

“And honestly, to be a fly on the wall while Amy [Adams] was working was pretty awesome.”

Continuing to lavish praise upon her co-stars, Menzel finished by confirming that she will enjoy a duet with James Marsden’s Prince Edward (whom she married at the end of Enchanted) in the second film.

“James Marsden and I have remained friends through the years and we just have a blast,” she said. “We have a song together and we get to be really silly and fun. It was great and I’m excited for people to see it.”

Here’s what you need to know, then, about Disenchanted.

What’s the plot of Disenchanted?

As per the film’s official synopsis, Disenchanted is set a decade after the events of Enchanted, with “Giselle questioning her happily ever after, and accidentally triggering events that make everyone’s lives turn upside-down in both the real world and in the animated kingdom of Andalasia.”

This hammers home the fact that the storybook ending we were given at the end of the OG movie, the one which reassured us that one of Disney’s most excellent princesses would live happily ever after, isn’t telling us the whole story.

That’s right, folks: the sequel sees Giselle and Robert living with his daughter Morgan in the suburb of Monroeville, overseen by the nefarious Malvina. And, when problems arise, Giselle wishes she and her family were living a perfect fairytale, which ultimately comes true, transporting them to her homeland of Andalasia.

Who will star in the cast of Disenchanted?

As mentioned already, six-time Academy Award nominee Adams has reprised her starring role in the new feature, alongside Dempsey, Menzel, and Marsden.

Elsewhere, Maya Rudolph has joined the cast as the sequel’s villain, Malvina Monroe.

“What’s a good fairy tale without a great villain?” she tweeted of the role back in May. “I’ll see you in Andalasia my pretties…”

Yvette Nicole Brown, Jayma Mays, Kolton Stewart and Oscar Nunez will also be starring in the film, and Disney has said that Susan Sarandon (aka the wicked queen of the OG) will be back in some guise, too. Gulp.
