Concepts and Birkenstock have partnered up to launch a limited-edition release of the Kyoto silhouette, titled the “City Connection.” The pack, consisting of five different colorways, was designed to celebrate the brands’ 10-year anniversary of collaboration and to honor Kyoto’s status as Boston’s first sister city.
The limited-edition Kyoto sandal boasts a felt finish in subtle classic hues — a nod to contemporary “Japonisme,” a movement triggered when Japan opened its doors to international trade in the 1800s, its cultural essence resonating across fashion, art and design landscapes globally.
Drawing inspiration from the aesthetics of Kyoto, the sandal embodies the simplistic elegance and natural allure of Japan’s ancient city. Its compact structure, accompanied by an individually adjustable buckle, is meant to encapsulate beauty, function and form.
At the core of this iconic Kyoto sandal lies Birkenstock’s legendary footbed, meticulously crafted to promote optimal foot health and comfort. Every element of the footbed is designed with a purpose, merging signature style with comfort. The felt finish, reminiscent of the tranquil textures of traditional Japanese gardens, along with its classic color palette, reflects the ambiance of Kyoto’s temples and shrines.
Other notable design elements of the sandals include co-branding at the footbed and “Concepts” lettering debossed across the leather strap. The Concepts x Birkenstock Kyoto “City Connection” pack is available now, in both men’s and women’s sizes, via Concepts’ official site.
