Felicity Huffman’s life is taking a drastic turn. Used to spending most of her time on television sets and in glamorous circles, the next few weeks are about to be quite different for the former Desperate Housewives star.
On Tuesday, Huffman surrendered herself to the authorities and began her 14-day jail sentence for her participation in the college admissions scandal.
Though we’ve all seen prison sentences portrayed in movies and on television, what will Huffman’s time in jail actually be like?
What will Huffman’s time in jail be like?
HollywoodLife recently spoke to Heidi Fleiss, a former inmate of FCI Dublin, the facility where Huffman is serving her time, about what it’s like in the prison.
“I was terrified when I got there and drove up in a prison van from a detention center in Los Angeles to the Dublin Camp where Felicity is,” Fleiss, who was arrested for being the leader of a prostitution ring, said. “[It] was kind of weird because you’re outside, there’s no barbed wire or anything. It’s not fancy and all these inmates were surrounding me, saying, ‘Do you need coffee? Do you need cigarettes? Any tennis shoes? Do you need toothpaste?’ I didn’t know what they were talking about, but I said, ‘yes’ just to fit in.”
But Fleiss doesn’t think that Huffman will have a rough time at all.
“She’ll have it really easy,” she said. “She won’t be assigned on a work cadre. [Felicity’s] going to live in the barracks and those are horrible.”
If she isn’t put in the barracks, Huffman might be placed in a slightly nicer area.
“There’s the barracks and then there’s these little rooms where there’s four people to a room and those are [for] the privileged people,” she continued.
Huffman will have to use the normal bathrooms which Fleiss said are very clean but always look dirty and have horrible water pressure.
“It’s like trying to take your shower with a drizzle sometimes… no water pressure…” she said.
According to Fleiss, Huffman’s day will be pretty controlled.
“Inmates have to be up at 5 am and be back in their cells in time for the 9 pm count, when their day ends and ‘quiet’ time begins, according to the handbook,” she said. “It’s really easy. Look, she’s an adult, she’s married, she has kids, she’s a mother. It’s not like you’re taking a Kardashian and changing up their life or something.”
Overall, Fleiss thinks that Huffman will come out of prison better off.
“It’s going to be like preparing for a movie role and I think it makes her a little bit more of an interesting person,” she said. “If] you were at a dinner party and you [were] seated next to her prior to prison you’d be like, ‘Oh, whatever. Just some actress.’ But, after prison, you would probably have a few more questions for her.”
What did Huffman go to prison for?
Huffman is now serving time after pleading guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud for paying $15,000 to have a proctor correct her daughter’s SAT responses.
Actress Lori Loughlin has also been connected with the college admissions scandal, although she pled not guilty and will face trial next year.
