Russell Watson, 54, was challenged to win stars for his I’m A Celebrity.. Get Me Out Of Here! campmates in the Rancid Rotisserie, where he was dunked in a vat of batter while being asked a series of questions by hosts Ant and Dec. The tenor has said he actually went into the gunge around 18 times off-camera, after some of the handles broke.
Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, he said: “They obviously edited it down but, I went in like 17/18 times.
“I was pulling them [handles] off.
“They had to stop and reset and give it a stir as all the handles had got stuck and wedged to the bottom.”
Russell said his camp mates were concerned about why he had taken so long to get back from his trial.
“They were all waiting for the food to come,” he added.
“It took me an hour to clean! I’m quite a hairy-legged man [and] this stuff had bonded like flour – it bonded with the hairs on my leg and everywhere.
“Three days later I was still picking this stuff off me.
“I used about two tubs of shower gel to get this stuff off me and even then, with a scrubbing brush I still couldn’t get it all off.”
The singer went on to say being strapped in for the challenge reminded him of having an MRI scan.
“I’m petrified of MRI scans because I’m really claustrophobic,” he explained, as a result of his previous brain tumours.
“As soon as he started clipping the straps on I thought, oh my god this feels like an MRI scan.
“All I was thinking was, and I didn’t say anything, I thought what if I go into the gunge and it breaks down?

“I was s******g myself if I’m being honest.
“I wasn’t expecting it to be as cold as it was, it was freezing. It was really cold in Wales that day.
“It was all down my throat, all up my nose. It was b****y awful.”
Despite his fears, Russell managed to win five out of 10 stars for his camp mates.
On his overall experience the father-of-two said he still misses the show, which was won by Giovanna Fletcher.
Elsewhere, Russell is hoping to uplift the nation with The Big Issue’s Big Singalong event on Good Friday.
“I think the whole kind of criteria for this is to put some smiles on some faces, I think it’s much needed,” he divulged.
