Richard Bacon’s car ‘dramatically caught fire’ while he was driving his wife and children home from Malibu on Monday.

The TV presenter, 44, took to Instagram to share photos and video footage of the Land Rover Discovery’s engine spewing flames and smoke while fire fighters helped put it out.

The former Blue Peter host confirmed he was with his wife Rebecca McFarlane, daughter Ivy, six, son Arthur, eight, and the family’s pet dog at the time of the incident but said everyone is ‘safe and happy’.

Joking about ‘needing a lift home’, Richard explained the family made a quick escape when the vehicle started to make a funny noise and they feared it may even explode.

He wrote in the caption: ‘I guess we’re gonna need a lift home. Thanks to the lovely Santa Monica fire department and the delightful people on the PCH who stopped to help. 

‘The car started making a funny noise as we drove home from Malibu. Then dramatically caught fire. 

‘Because we’ve seen a lot of films we moved back thinking it might explode. It didn’t. Apparently that’s just a movie thing.

‘All four of us were in there. Everyone fine and happy. May not go with Land Rover next time.’

As he filmed from a safe distance away from the car, Richard appeared shocked as the fire fighters used extinguishers on the burning car.

In another video the former Blue Peter presenter showed Arthur and Ivy as they proudly wore firefighter helmets while watching the professionals extinguish their car. 

While Richard shared another video of the family getting a lift home with the burned out husk of their car being towed along behind them.

In June, Richard purchased a luxurious $5.3million (£4.29million) mansion in the Hollywood Hills.

His palatial pad is in the exclusive Bird Streets neighbourhood and lies directly above LA’s Sunset Strip. 

Some of the star’s A-list neighbours include Justin Bieber, Keanu Reeves and Avatar star Sam Worthington. 

While many Bird Streets homes are ultra-contemporary, the Bacon estate is a 1930s Mediterranean-style throwback compound with plenty of land but no city lights views.  

The purchase comes after Richard inked a deal with Universal Television to produce unscripted TV content for the company.
