Following the tragic news of a devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria earlier this week, countless famous faces have taken social media to share their condolences with the grieving families that have lost countless loved ones and homes in the harrowing disaster.
In the early hours of Monday morning, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck southern Turkey and northern Syria, claiming the lives of over 17,000 people across both countries.
In the wake of the tragedy, many stars have joined forces to urge their followers to donate and support rescue efforts, including Louise Thompson, who took to social media to share a clip of a young baby being rescued alive from the rubble after being trapped beneath the debris for three days.
“Unbearable scenes following the earthquake in Turkey. Look how incredible this rescue team are…” she wrote, while also urging her followers to donate to rescue efforts being led by the Choose Love campaign.
Michelle Keegan also called on her followers and fans to “please donate and share” as she reposted an appeal by Save The Children, to help the kids impacted by the earthquakes in Syria and Turkey.
Describing the situation as “so heartbreaking”, Michelle also shared a clip of a young girl being pulled alive from the wreckage of a decimated building as the crowds around her cheered in celebration of a successful rescue.
Love Island winner Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu also took to social media to thanks fans for their support so far.
In one story in particular the Turkish actress shared a photograph of the items one fan had opted to donate to those who have lost their homes, including bedding and bags of warm clothing.
“Hopefully this will help those in Turkey and Syria,” wrote the fan, to which Ekin-Su replied: “Yes, thank you!” alongside a teary eyed emoji.
Speaking on Sky News earlier in the week, Ekin-Su opened up about the situation as she said: "I have members of my family who have obviously experienced the shake, they've been outside, they've been sleeping outside.”
“It's scary because it's people who are very close to me. I've had numerous people on Instagram reach out to me, they've sent me locations of an address, pictures live. They are screaming for help."
Location, Location, Location host Kirstie Allsop also drew attention to the devastating situation, as she revealed that the “horror” of the event had kept her awake at night.
Opening up about her personal connection to Turkey, the star told her 434,000 Twitter followers :“Woke at 3am, must admit I lay there thinking about the horror of a night in the freezing cold, having lost family and friends.”
She then continued: “I have never been to Syria, but I have spent a great deal of time in Turkey.”
Eastenders icon Danny Dyer was another star also keen to raise awareness of the terrifying situation, in Turkey and Syria, as he joined his close pal Tamer Hassan and Love Island star daughter Belle, to try and raise £100,000 to help with the humanitarian crisis.
Speaking about the plight of people in Turkey on Thursday, Tamer told Sky News: "We have family missing. Due to the cold weather, we're not hopeful… we're quite worried.”
With tears in his eyes, he then continued: “I have no words. We're all devastated. We have family that are lost. I'll be heading to Turkey, we're trying to find a route in to the worst affected areas."
There was even support from further afield too, as Bollywood star Priyanka Chopra-Jonas also shared her heartache at the situation as she uploaded an Instagram story which read: “Devastating” alongside a broken heart emoji.
Alongside the story, the actress also shared an image of broken buildings amid the devastating updates.
So far over 17,100 people have lost their lives in the devastating disaster, with around 10.9 million people in Syria and 13.5 million people in Turkey, having lost their homes, businesses and possessions according to the UN and Turkish officials.
For anyone wishing to donate money to support the relief effort, they can do so on the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) website, which brings together 15 leading UK aid charities to raise funds quickly and efficiently in times of crisis overseas.
