Lizzo Has a Flute Named After This Famous Singer's Daughter

If you’ve been a fan of Lizzo since her come up, then you know that she has a long-standing relationship with the flute. There have been many instances when the singer has pulled out her flute mid-act on stage or on social media and put on hip-shaking performances that have left most of us speechless.

Since no Lizzo performance is complete without her handy wind instrument, it makes sense that her infamous flutes have names. While we already know that her trademark flute is named after the incomparable Beyoncé, it turns out that Lizzo kept with the Queen Bey theme when christening the latest addition to her instrument collection.

The singer started playing the flute when she was a child

Lizzo, whose real name is Melissa Jefferson, developed her flute-playing skills at a young age. She started playing the flute when she was just 10-year-old and studied the musical instrument throughout school.

She eventually joined a marching band in her native Houston and even majored in classical flute performance at Houston University. Unfortunately, Lizzo’s father fell ill during her junior year, and the financial strain forced her away from her studies.

In 2011, Lizzo decided to move to Minneapolis to connect with other musicians and break into the music industry. Though she built up a following of fans over time, it still took her a while to break through the mainstream music scene.

But in 2019, Lizzo found herself skyrocketing to fame after her song “Truth Hurts” gained popularity on the video-sharing app TikTok and was featured in the Netflix movie Someone Great. Since then, singer’s superstardom has only increased, and today, she’s known as one of the biggest stars in the music industry.

Lizzo’s flute, Sasha Flute, has become a pop culture icon

By this point, many know that Lizzo regularly showcases her flute-playing abilities during performances and on social media.

Whether it’s playing along to a popular song beat or using her flute skills as a comedic prop, Lizzo often shines the spotlight on her trusty performance companion and has even given it a name that is quite fitting for a cultural icon like itself.

In a recent interview with Vogue, Lizzo revealed that she calls her flute “Sasha Flute” after Beyoncé’s alter ego, Sasha Fierce.

Lizzo also revealed that the musical instrument resides in a Swarovski-crystal case in her home, suggesting that Sasha Flute receives nothing less than the all-star treatment.

Lizzo named her latest flute after Beyoncé eldest daughter

In addition to Sasha Flute, Lizzo is also the proud owner of several other instruments, which she showed off to David Letterman during an episode of his Netflix series, My Next Guest Needs No Introduction.

While the hitmaker’s trademark instrument, Sasha Flute, was the star of the show, she introduced Letterman to plenty of other musical instruments that hold a special place in her heart, including an ocarina, a toot, and her latest edition: a shiny blue flute named Blew Ivy after Beyoncé’s eldest daughter, Blue Ivy Carter.

“She’s controversial,” Lizzo explained. “They were like, ‘That’s not a flute, that’s a toy!’”

The instrument made its debut last year during Lizzo’s performance on the Today show in New York. At the time, the singer joked that she had to use Blew Ivy because Sasha was on vacation.

“I went to Hawaii and she was mad…,” she said, “so when it was time to go on tour, she was like, ‘You taking my cousin, Blew Ivy.’”

Though Blew Ivy is on its way to become a cultural phenomenon just like Beyoncé’s daughter, it still has a while to go before it’s on Sasha Flute’s level. But with a name like that, we’re sure it won’t be much longer before Blew also becomes a legendary flute just like Sasha.
