Jeremy Vine, 56, has admitted he can’t stop himself from encouraging the contestants on Eggheads, and struggles to remain “impartial” while hosting the show. It comes after it was announced that the game show will be moving away from the BBC, where it has been broadcast for 17 years.

Eggheads sees teams of contestants aim to beat a panel of specialist quizzers in a tough general knowledge test.

The programme will now be airing on Channel 5, with Jeremy remaining as host.

When quizzed on whether he is always rooting for the challengers on the series, Jeremy admitted: “Oh, yes. Every time!”

The star added: “I always tease the Eggheads if they ever lose a game.

“They know I’m basically rooting for the challengers.”

The Channel 5 star continued to this week’s Radio Times: “It’s a major lapse of impartiality, I know!”

The BBC has strict impartiality rules, which the broadcaster’s director general Tim Davie has been cracking down on recently.

Jeremy still works at the BBC on his Radio 2 show.

The busy presenter also fronts his self-titled The Jeremy Vine Show on Channel 5.

Despite his hectic schedule, Jeremy said “yes straightaway” to reprising his role as host of Eggheads after the show went on a 16-month hiatus.

He told the publication: “Of course I said yes straightaway.

“I knew it was sleeping at the BBC, and I was hoping it was not dead.

Fortunately for dedicated fans of Eggheads, the show won’t be going through too many changes following its move to Channel 5.

Jeremy revealed: “It’s going to be the show that people still love; the Eggheads, the question levels, the format, the colouring of the set, it’s all the same”

The presenter announced the exciting news on his Channel 5 show back in March.

He said: “The programme which I’ve presented for more than 10 years, Eggheads, one of the greatest quizzes in the history of British TV, is moving to Channel 5 later this year.”

In a statement, the star added: “In a statement, Vine added: ‘I can’t wait to be reunited with the mighty Eggheads and see new teams try to take them on.

“I’m sure fans of Eggheads will share in my delight that it has found a new home on Channel 5.”
