Dan Walker hits out at Strictly Come Dancing critics who ask how is he still in the show

Strictly Come Dancing star Dan Walker has responded to critics of his performances on the BBC Saturday night flagship show.

The BBC Breakfast host has received criticism for his dancing ability in recent weeks but the TV presenter strongly defended himself on Instagram on Tuesday to his 240,000 followers.

In a passionate post by the TV presenter, he said: "I know articles like this are sourced from a few comments on social media but each week I get thousands of messages from people who love the show and are really enjoying watching @nadiyabychkova teaching me to dance."

He added: "When I’ve watched Strictly in the past I have always liked seeing great dancers but also those who learn to love it and are working hard to improve every week. It’s a TV show and not the world championships."

The Sheffield-born contestant is paired with professional dancer Nadiya Bychkova for the 2021 series.

The dancing duo have shared photos of them visiting Dan's local restaurants throughout the series and have remained positive, despite the recent negativity they have received on social media.

In his post, the 44 year old continued: "I never thought I would be able to do some of the things Nadiya has taught me. She has given me a confidence that I thought was way beyond me. I just want to learn as many dances as possible."

He ended his post in defiant mood: "Anyway… on with the American Smooth. Whoever you vote for this weekend… I hope you enjoy the show. I will continue to do it with a massive smile on my face."

Some famous faces came to the defence of Dan too, including Strictly professional Katya Jones.

She commented: "Dan! You are brilliant and deserve so much respect for your commitment. Together with Nadiya you are putting in so much work, no less than anyone else. Bringing millions of people joy every single week. Will be supporting you all the way."

For all the online criticism the pair have received, they've had enough votes from the viewers at home throughout the series to avoid being in the dreaded bottom two – meaning Dan and Nadiya have not even had to face a dance-off to stay in the competition so far.

This week Dan will dance the American Smooth and will be attempting to lift his partner Nadiya the first time on Saturday night.

However, the dance-off was the fate of Olympic swimmer and multi-gold medallist Adam Peaty, who departed Sunday's result show with professional dancer Katya Jones.

Adam said he 'was not okay' as he lost the judges vote to Tilly Ramsay and her professional dance partner Adam Peaty.
